VIA IMC conservation model using the example of the A4 motorway near Hörselberge

VIA IMC has developed a maintenance model for the motorway operator VIA Gateway. The model provides forecasts on the condition of roads for up to 30 years. It also calculates and predicts how the condition of roads will develop over the life span of an entire construction project. Users, such as project managers of motorway operators, can have the results output via several formats, including PDF and spreadsheets.

A 3D model visualizes data

The forecast results are also displayed graphically. They are visualized using a 3D BIM model. Users can thus see all construction and maintenance measures clearly at a glance.

There are several advantages for the users to use the model:

  • They can plan more efficiently.
The data is prepared quickly and clearly. Huge amounts of data that can hardly be handled are a thing of the past. Users can see spatially how they have to plan construction and maintenance measures.

  • They can act more efficiently.
They can see whether construction and maintenance measures are planned unfavorably. Project managers of motorway operators, for example, can see immediately from the model and not only at the construction site, where they might have to intervene.

Construction and maintenance measures as well as costs can be planned, controlled and visualized - data can also be visualized with the model at the construction sites on site. The tool helps planners to intervene in traffic as little as possible despite construction sites and, at best, to block only one motorway lane. The tool also helps to reduce construction sites and optimize costs.

Financing of construction and maintenance measures is even more reliable

On behalf of VIA Gateway, VIA IMC tested the concept on a 52-kilometer section of the A4 highway in Thuringia near Hörselberge, between Eisenach and Gotha. VIA IMC determined which construction and maintenance measures were necessary for the roads, road markings and bridges.

VIA IMC also prepared the financial planning for VIA Gateway for the project, which will run for 20 years. The project partners VIA Gateway, VINCI Concessions and Meridiam can use the new conservation model to reliably plan all their construction, maintenance and cost activities over the long term.

The VIA IMC maintenance model at a glance:

  • VIA IMC creates a 3D model of the existing roadway-

  • VIA IMC determines the necessary maintenance measures for road construction, bridge construction and road markings.

  • VIA IMC optimises all these maintenance measures - taking into account availability costs and road safety costs.

  • VIA IMC illustrates planned construction measures in a 3D BIM model
